Don’t be afraid to take the hard route
July 2, 2007
What’s easier? Glossing over the truth; burying the lies and difficulties to forge a guilty life? Or confronting problems which, in your mind, are painfully real and blatent, even at the expense of a happier existence?
Do we even have a choice?
Some people do. I guess I do, too, and a lot of the time (perhaps because I’m a westerner; a western consumer) I live the life I’m expected to. I work, play, fuck and eat. I say the right things and laugh at their jokes. But a significant amount of my life is spent challenging convention, looking at aspects of the world from a ridiculous angle. What would it be like to have bombs strapped to my chest, fully believing that I too will join a “god”? Do these terrorists really believe in what they are doing, or are they simply brainwashed by the confusion of a modern religious war?
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if a new worldwide industry was suddenly born, reinvigorating towns across the country whose modern way of life is increasingly reliant on so-called service industries which matter so little. We’ve lost touch with ourselves as human beings, part of smaller communities. We’re herded into cities where once the industrial revolution took place. Now, though, we’re just treading water, supplying meaningless service after meaningless service. Insurance, finance, advice, tweenies writing lame scripts for television. There is so little depth to our lives now.
Is Britain’s relationship with America simply to strengthen their pact in the event of them (USA) taking sides with China in 20 years? Has Britain become so powerless that we need America so?
Why should I have to pay so much for my rent after all I’ve been through? Do I think I have special talents? Yes. Is that arrogant? Probably. Am I arrogant? Definitely not. Why can’t I sit down with other twenty year olds and counsel them for their pain and grieving? Why can’t I do that? Because I’m apparently not qualified. Instead, they will hear from over-qualified empathetic-starved psychs whose only solution to a problem is to answer a question with a question.
Never take the easy route. Challenge society’s conventions. Don’t like something? Ask yourself why and ask others why, too.
